High-Priced Coffee
The most expensive coffee in the United States isn’t Starbucks Dark Espresso Roast ($12.95 a pound) or Gedeo Single Origin Espresso ($25 a pound) or La Cima Finca el Injerto beans from Stumptown Coffee Roasters ($38 a pound). It’s those little bitty Keurig K-cups for individual-serving coffee makers. Empty out enough 7 gram Nespresso Arpeggio pods to make a pound and it will run you $51.
“With Coffee, the Price of Individualism Can Be High,” Oliver Strand, New York Times

Nonsense In All Forms Of Communication
Of course I responded "yes" then immediately contacted social media goddess/presenter extraordinaire (and my friend), Stacey, to ask her advice. (Because my offer to speak at a small gathering at a garden club is totally on par with her speaking engagement in Poland for a billion dollar restaurant company in Central Europe that hired her to speak to all of their managers.)
Whatever. She did give me some really good advice, including:
- find out what the agenda is....what is the goal of the conference or meeting where you are speaking
- find out the basic demographics of the group....first rule of comedy is knowing your audience
- record all speaking engagements both so I can improve and also for marketing purposes
- do not poop in your pants during the Q&As
Dude.

Is The Post Office Really Broke?
The U.S. Postal Service is broke, right?
No.
John Nichols explains:
“At the behest of the Republican-controlled Congress of the Bush-Cheney era, the USPS has been forced since 2006 to pre-fund future retiree health benefits. As the American Postal Workers Union notes, ‘This mandate is the primary cause of the agency’s financial crisis. No other government agency or private company bears this burden, which costs the USPS approximately $5.5 billion annually.’”
–John Nichols, “The Post Office is Not Broke,” The Nation
USPS is legally obligated to serve every location in the United States at the same uniform rate. That requires the Post Office to hire so many workers that it is the second largest civilian employer in the nation. That’s the size of insurance pool USPS must pre-fund every year.
