Student Jailed for Zombie Terror

Just saw this story.

This bothers me. A lot.

In a nutshell, this high school student was just arrested and charged with "making terrorist threats" against his high school. Why do I have a problem with this? Because these charges of threats, according to the student in question, came about after his grandparents got their hands on his journal... his journal where he was working on a short story about zombies over running a generic high school.

So now he sits in a Kentucky jail. Because of a work of fiction. A work of fiction featuring zombies. Not armed teens killing teachers. Not a janitor building a bomb. Zombies attacking a school.

Even so, police say the nature of the story makes it a felony. "Anytime you make any threat or possess matter involving a school or function it's a felony in the state of Kentucky," said Winchester Police detective Steven Caudill.

This is the most dangerous sentence in the whole piece. It brings to light a zero-tolerance nightmare that needs to be addressed in the public forum. Preferably with a clear head and logic.

Mostly, it the "possess any matter involving a school or function..." part. By this reasoning, anyone who owns the Stephen King novel Carrie can be arrested as a potential threat to a school.

After all, a ridiculed psychokinetic girl is just as likely as zombies. Right?
