Copyright, companies, individuals and news: the rules of the road | Cory Doctorow | Technology | guardian.co.uk

Cory Doctorow once again tries to lay out the sensible way copyright should work. Even if you don't agree with other stuff that Doctorow does, his stance on copyright should seem sensible. Unless you're a corporation like Disney or the RIAA. Fair use, people, know what it is and when you can (and should) claim it. More importantly, stand up and defend it when its infringed upon by bullies of any size.

Because some things never go out of style... and some things should.

Saw that the Feral Cities article from the Naval War College is making the rounds again. Can't say I'm surprised, watching and reading the news. We're seeing more and more places around the globe descending into warlord-run city-states. Coups, juntas, insurgents, lawlessness, might making right... so much of it was laid out in black and white years ago (the article is from 2003, and I've been reading other stuff from the mid-90s and earlier), how could we not have seen it coming?

More good news... and a wee bit of privacy...

Judge Nixes Warrantless Surveillance

A federal judge ruled Thursday that the government's warrantless wiretapping program is unconstitutional and ordered an immediate halt to it.

U.S. District Judge Anna Diggs Taylor in Detroit became the first judge to strike down the National Security Agency's program, which she says violates the rights to free speech and privacy.

Now, let's see how long it is before that decision is reversed.

And after it is, let's try to keep an eye on Judge Taylor's career. If I were a betting man, I'd say the odds are she's going to hit some hard times in the near future. Probably shortly after the decision is overturned/ignored/discarded and the media stops mentioning her name all the time.
